ETHSafari Marks Five Years of ConnectingAfrica and the Global BlockchainEcosystem

Five years ago, a group of African Web3 community leaders travelled to conferences around the world and kept hearing the same question:

What is happening in Africa?

Africa already had a fast-growing blockchain ecosystem. However, its builders, communities and innovations were often missing from the global conversation.

They believed Africa’s story should be told by Africans.

That belief became ETHSafari.

In Swahili, safari means journey. ETHSafari was built around that idea. It is not simply a conference. It is a journey that connects Africa with the global blockchain ecosystem while showcasing Kenya’s technology, culture and landscapes.

The journey begins in Nairobi, Kenya’s leading technology hub. Here, developers, founders and community members take part in workshops, networking sessions and the ETHSafari Hackathon.

The hackathon gives participants an opportunity to build solutions, work with mentors and compete for prizes.

The journey then continues aboard the BlockTrain. Participants travel on Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway through Tsavo National Park. The experience creates space for conversations, partnerships and new ideas beyond the traditional conference setting.

ETHSafari concludes in Kilifi, on Kenya’s coast. The main conference brings together builders, investors, researchers, creators and blockchain communities from Africa and around the world.

Over the past five years, ETHSafari has grown into one of Africa’s leading blockchain gatherings. It has helped connect local talent and communities with global organisations while positioning Kenya as a destination for innovation and collaboration.

ETHSafari has been supported by organisations including Visa, Ethereum Foundation, DFINITY Foundation, Brave Browser, Polkadot, Celo, Optimism, NoOnes, Lisk, EMURGO Africa, World, Filecoin Foundation, Algorand Foundation, Unstoppable Domains, NEAR Protocol, Coinbase, StarkWare, Base, Adaverse and ETHGlobal.

This year marks ETHSafari’s fifth anniversary under the theme “The Fifth Safari.”

The 2026 edition will take place from 4 to 13 September. It will feature the ETHSafari Hackathon, workshops, networking events, the BlockTrain journey and the main conference in Kilifi.

Five years after the first Safari, the mission remains the same: to connect Africa with the world and ensure the continent’s blockchain story is seen, heard and shaped by the people building it.
